The Kano School of painting is a mixture of Japanese and Chinese art.
That school was the most powerful in Japan for about five centuries and
the last member of the Kano School died about a hundred years ago, while
teaching at the Japanese Academy of Fine Arts and Music. He taught Taikan
Yokoyama, and other famous artists of that time. This school was successful
for nearly 400 years!

We can see many of Taikan's pictures at the wonderful Adachi Museum
of Art, which has the greatest collection of his art in the world! The
next time you go there, look closely to see which country had the greatest
effect on his work. Ink painting, which had come from China years before,
and Taikan reverted to that style to prove the roots of his training.
He was a great artist!

Reading about the development of art, we should all look at the world
around us and think of how much other countries have given to the cultural
development of Japan. We should also enjoy the beauty of the art, and
imagine the feelings of the great artists, who created such lovely works
for us to see. I think the Momoyama Era was the greatest, because the
art showed great talent and dignity.

I love it all, from the most ancient, roughly made pots, to the most
beautiful works of the contemporary artists. In recent years, I see the
changes in art as something not to my liking. Of course, there are some
good artists, who really work from their hearts, but usually, it is only
a profession which is done to make money. The old ways of working at something
to make it perfect, from pride in one's craft, were by far the best. Don't
you agree with me?
